    I'm a lowercase libertarian.

I have a friend who's SERIOUSLY LP. He worked the Badnarik website during the campaign.

So you like libertarian ideas you just don't vote for them?

"So you like libertarian ideas you just don't vote for them?"

Well, that's oversimplifying things a little, but is essentially correct.
If I compare my opinions to all available platforms, the LP comese closest. But you have the challenge firstly of breaking the back of the 2-party system to make a 3rd party viable.

This time around the LP and the greens made some serious strides, but are still so marginal in pulling votes as to be insignificant.

So, solve problem #1 and we'll talk. Otherwise, I'm going to be aggressively voting against greater evils.

...Unless Cthulhu runs.. then I'm voting for him. :)

So you won't join until everybody else does eh? I'm glad people didn't all have that mentality with other things, we'd never have the internet, telephones, cars, or electricity. Remember, when your voting for the lesser of two evils, your still in favor of evil.

Romantic notion that one can change the course of large events, but unlikely. Really It's just a practical matter of risk management.

These things are not gonna change in our lifetime (or rather, the odds are very very small that they will). And if they do change, the odds are even less that they'll change in just the way you wish they would. We don't decide these things.

What you CAN do however, is tweak the existing system to the best of your ability. That's the most effective approach, if you look at it from a strictly cost/benefit perspective.

Yeah, some Wunderkind mut come along and revolutionize.. is that you? Is it in your lifetime? That's a weak bet, on the very best day.

But, you know, I don't begrudge it to anyone. I admire my LP friend for his youthful idealism. I am, however, over 40 myself, and after life beats the stuffing out of you enough, you lose that drive to swim upstream so aggressively. Instead you learn to choose your battles and spend your effort where it'll have the most impact...

Yet another victim of historical ignorance. Where do you think the Rep and Dem parties came from? They were not the first, in fact the predessors of the GOP (the Whig party) died rather abruptly as did the Federalist party (the predessor of the Democrats). Political parties do take decades to build up potency, and some quite often do just peter off and die. As far the "romantic notions" go you can spare me those, as i tend to take the hard nosed strategist approach. This is why i rarely concern myself with the LP presidential candidate, the local candidates and fundraising initiatives are what concern me (and should concern any other LP members around here).
