late 80's clubbin'

topic posted Wed, May 19, 2004 - 5:38 AM by  Windy
I lived in Atlanta from 1987-1991, I was wondering if anyone here use to hang out at Weekends or Club Rio (before Rob Lowe ruined it)?

Omg. I used to hang out at Weekends (both Peachtree & Spring when it moved) and Club Rio all the time in the 80's. Man, was it a good time.

Nice to "meet" someone else who remembers them. :)

I'll never forget the first time I went to Weekends on Peachtree, I look over at the bar to see a guy with nothing on but Christmas lights. We had such good times there. I was in Atlanta going to Design school at Bauder College, I also was working in the jewelry department at Macy's Lenox Mall (I think that was the name of the mall?). I mention this because maybe we knew each other or had aquaintances? Well, thanks so much for replying!

The answer to that question is - They're old enough to proudly admit they were able to experience one of the most awesome eras in rock history: THE PUNK REVOLUTION !

yeah - and back then the drinking age was 19... then for a little while (liek 6 months or something stupid like that) it went up to 20 - and then finally to 21

but that really didn't matter because clubs, bars, and liquor stores didn't card anyone anyways... that was just before MADD (Mothers Agains Drunk Driving) took a stand and laws starting being enforced...

I remember them & many, many others. I played in Nixon's Aids, The Restraints, Phreddy Vomit & the Teenzinheat, The Wake. I lived at the original "Blue Rat Hotel". My best friend was Chris Wood - We were practically inseparable. My question is - does anyone still remember me ?

Well, I was the youngest tenant of Pershing Point in Stratford Hall (I have the sign from the W.Peachtree side , I stole it before they demolished the building)..... I loved Chris Wood to death, he was always a gentleman around me, I wish I knew where Phreddy went because I keep hearing he died in Seattle...... NOT in a fall through the roof at 688:). I loved Margaritaville and the Nightporters....... was present at openings in ALL Blue Rat locations....... so it seems that there is no way I wouldnt remember you. I remember Malibu, Moses, Bobby Burns, Billy Asshole Bateman, Tam McMahon, Pam, Loreli, Tina, Robin, Ann Bracewell, Mark Dienstag, Raul, Clark, Ill quit now.......do you remember me???

As far as clubbing, I was the Door Bitch at Rio, Scenario, Petrus, Lavitas (during the run of "let my people come" an off broadway musical... Velvet, Colorbox, Plastic, and I think that was all......... if more come to mind I will post...........

Okay...months after the fact I'm replying to say Phreddy is alive and well and living in like Duluth or something...I have his email address here somewhere. I can definitely get it from his brother,Eric, who I keep in touch with.

Did y'all know Kris Clower? I used to adore him...RIP Kris.

And remember when RuPaul danced at Weekends? What great times.

Velvet!!! I lived there... Alright I lived about 5 blocks away. Actually worked there for about a year.

given all the clubs you mention, we've crossed paths many times.

OMG memory lane! I was at Georgia Tech from 1980 - 1985 and spent my free time at 688, Agora Ballroom, the Bistro, Moonshadow Saloon, Weekends, Numbers, etc... I have such incredible memories of the bands that I saw! 688 has a place on mySpace that lists all of the bands that ever played there. I must have seen over half of them. Nothing can compare to those days. Does anyone remember the name of the club that opened on West Peachtree after 688 closed... it was almost theater like (maybe had theater in its name?) ... I saw OMD there live in the late '80s but can't remember the club's name. I think it was West P'tree ... Back then everything wasn't so overdeveloped. You could actually walk around that whole area between 10th and 14th and it sort of seemed peaceful in a way. I remember drinking Rolling Rock beer at 688 ... shopping at Wax N Facts in L5P ... ahhh, that was the life!

I went to both Metroplex and 688 regularly. My favorite night was seeing the Dead Kennedys at the Plex and the Red Hot Chil Peppers later that night at 688.

I used to go to Weekends, Rio, Velvet, 688, Metroplex. I have lots of old photos from 688, Rio and the Metroplex. Was also a house photographer (whatever that means) for the Masquerade once upon a time. Lots of great memories there and friendships made.

Does anyone remember the "House Fairy" house music show on WRAS 88.5? He had a kick ass show where he just played housey singles (no dj mixes). I think it was Fridays 10p to 12a.This spot has morphed into the currnet "Houseworks Show", which has really declined. This was around 1992 when i first moved here.

House Fairy, that was Stephen Stubbs. A WEEKENDS regular.

Does any one remember The Bistro? The Original Metroplex? TV Dinners? Illusions? Warehouse parties on Peters, Mangum, Trinity, or Broad Street. Pilotex? Mattress Factory Shows?

Have ANY of you had a beer at the Miami Bar? or the Domino Lounge? or San Souci? The Cove, oh, and of course Backstreets...

The Bistro was a second home for a while. I still stay in touch with those guys. As for the old Metroplex, you can still find Paul Cornwell hanging out in East Atlanta trying to open a club there. PilloTex and Mattress Factory were pure magic. Peters Street was a good place to go looking for trouble and finding it in generous amounts, hanging out with the oh-so-nonconformist dressed in black clones. *sigh* What wonderful memories I have.

I remember all these people. I worked at the Strand Hair salon on 17th st.. Kira I did your hair along with most of the blue rats. My friend Jane and I always went to the clubs and I married Jim Wakeman who was an artist at the Gallery. I remember you dated my friend Steve G... I wonder where all these people are. I can still hear Freddy singing "plastic jeasus on my dashboard of my car".
